Conversas de Café is an essay platform that explores culture, identity, and belonging through reflective narrative writing.
Com curadoria de Leo Maciel — escritor e artista brasileiro radicado na Europa — o projeto nasce da experiência de viver entre geografias, línguas e ritmos sociais distintos. A partir dessa vivência, os ensaios exploram como a identidade se forma e se transforma através da memória, do tom cultural, das instituições e das pequenas interações do cotidiano.
Como os ensaios se movem
As Conversas partem frequentemente da observação vivida e deslocam-se gradualmente para a reflexão analítica. Não procuram responder a ciclos imediatos de notícias nem oferecer conclusões definitivas. Propõem, antes, um espaço estruturado para pensar a complexidade cultural, a experiência diaspórica e as formas subtis através das quais aprendemos quem somos no mundo.
Fica aqui um convite à leitura lenta, à escuta atenta e à possibilidade de habitar mais de um ritmo cultural sem perder coerência.
Curated by Leo Maciel — a Brazilian writer and artist based in Europe — the project emerges from the experience of living between geographies, languages and social rhythms. From this position, the essays explore how identity is shaped and reshaped through memory, cultural tone, institutions and the subtle interactions of everyday life.
How the essays move
The Conversas often begin in lived observation and gradually unfold into analytical reflection. They do not aim to respond to immediate news cycles nor to offer definitive conclusions. Instead, they create an attentive space to think through cultural complexity, diasporic experience and the quiet ways in which we come to understand who we are in the world.
Here is an invitation to slow reading, attentive listening, and the possibility of inhabiting more than one cultural rhythm without losing coherence.
O espírito do projeto
Os ensaios publicados transitam por geografias, línguas e atmosferas. Alguns começam em cidades, filmes, livros ou momentos históricos. Outros emergem da migração, da memória corporificada ou da textura emocional de certos lugares.
O que os conecta não é um único tema, mas uma sensibilidade partilhada: a crença de que a escrita reflexiva ainda pode criar espaço para o pensamento numa era fragmentada.
Conversas de Café interessa-se pelas formas como a cultura se manifesta no corpo, na linguagem, na arquitetura, no som, no gesto, na ausência e na memória. Interessa-se igualmente pelas intersecções entre o íntimo e o coletivo — como uma lembrança pessoal pode abrir-se para uma história mais ampla, ou como o pertencimento é frequentemente negociado entre lugares visíveis e heranças invisíveis.
Esta não é uma plataforma para opiniões rápidas.
É um espaço para ensaios que se demoram — textos que procuram nuance, atmosfera e experiência, permitindo que a reflexão se desdobre sem reduzi-la à certeza.
Publicado em português e inglês, Conversas de Café acolhe textos pessoais ou analíticos, narrativos ou filosóficos, enraizados em lugares específicos ou moldados por trajetórias diaspóricas e paisagens interiores do pensamento.
Mais do que um site, é um convite a permanecer em conversa com os mundos que continuam a viver dentro de nós.
The spirit of the project
The essays published here move across geographies, languages and atmospheres. Some begin in cities, films, books or historical moments. Others emerge from migration, embodied memory or the emotional texture of certain places.
What connects them is not a single theme, but a shared sensibility: the belief that reflective writing can still create space for thoughtfulness in a fragmented age.
Conversas de Café is interested in the ways culture lives in the body, in language, in architecture, in sound, in gesture, in absence and in memory. It is equally attentive to the crossings between the intimate and the collective — how a personal recollection may open onto a wider history, or how belonging is often negotiated between visible places and invisible inheritances.
This is not a platform for fast opinion.
It is a space for essays that linger — texts that seek nuance, atmosphere and lived experience, allowing reflection to unfold without reducing it to certainty.
Published in Portuguese and English, Conversas de Café welcomes writing that is personal or analytical, narrative or philosophical, rooted in specific places or shaped by diasporic journeys and interior landscapes of thought.
More than a website, it's an invitation to remain in conversation with the worlds that continue to live within us.
